the history of the Serra da Arrábida

The Serra da Arrábida is a beautiful mountainous area located in the Setúbal district of western Portugal and is part of the Arrábida Natural Park. This area is known for its spectacular limestone mountains, Mediterranean vegetation, and a coastline with white sandy beaches and turquoise waters.

Historically, the Serra da Arrábida was inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by archaeological finds, including caves with traces of human presence. In Roman times, the area was used for agriculture and fishing, particularly for the production of garum (a famous fish sauce).

During the 16th century, the Serra gained religious significance with the establishment of the Convento da Arrábida, a monastery founded by the Franciscans. This monastery became a place of spiritual retreat, far from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Throughout the centuries, the Serra da Arrábida has remained an important natural and cultural site. Today it is a protected nature reserve where visitors can enjoy hiking trails, spectacular views, historic monasteries and rich biodiversity.
